TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — A pet microchip company that abruptly shut its doors leaves many pet owners without a way to find their furry friends if they go missing.

Earlier this week, the pet microchip company Save This Life, based in Texas, closed its doors without warning.

If you are unsure if your pet has this company’s microchip, a Magic Valley veterinarian said there are ways to find out.

“There are several entities, anything from animal control to veterinary offices, to animal shelters that can go ahead and get the number and just basically calling a new company and say, ‘Hey, we need to register this chip, and it should be taken care of pretty easily,’” said Dr. Zsigmond Szanto, a veterinarian with the Twin Falls Veterinary Clinic.

Szanto explained that microchips are harmless to animals and are essentially just a little bead that only works when scanned by a special machine.

Mallory Cox at the Twin Falls Animal Shelter said they can help you figure out if your pet now needs updated registration.

“If you have a ‘Save This Life’ microchip, we can help out with that at the shelter,” Cox said. “And if you don’t know your microchip number, we can scan your animal to assist with having that because you generally need that to reregister also.”

Szanto said zero microchips have been scanned at the Twin Falls Veterinary Clinic. Still, his team is also ready to assist those in need should they come in the door.

“I’m sure that obviously as pet owners become aware of it, we will get more questions and, you know, we’ll provide more answers on particular situations that we get,” Szanto said.

It is also essential to ensure your information on the chip is up-to-date, as that is one of the most common issues, especially for people who move often.

“Clients, especially with mobility nowadays, moving from state to state, (the best thing to do) is go ahead and register the chip and update a new address as they move, update emergency contacts so pets can be located and returned,” Szanto said.
