Idaho Transportation Department continuing construction on South Jerome interchange

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The Idaho Transportation Department has been working on replacing the South Jerome interchange, or exit 168, and widening Interstate 84 between the City of Jerome and Twin Falls.
These improvements will increase capacity and improve safety on Interstate 84 to serve the region for years to come, according to ITD.
The project has been ongoing since April 2023. In 2024, construction crews completed work in the median of Interstate 84 and shifted traffic into the newly constructed lanes.
For the rest of 2025, ITD said drivers should continue to expect road closures and detours, lane restrictions on the interstate, and variable speed limits.
Idaho State Police said they will continue to help monitor traffic in those construction zones.
“We’re kind of the enforcement aspect of it, so they’re the ones that decide where their engineers are putting up the signs-- you know, this is going to be the speed limit for the area, so we come in and make sure people are actually doing that speed limit and we work to make sure we’re keeping that work zone as safe as we can,” Sgt. Scott Bolen said.
There were accidents in that construction zone last year, which is why it is important to pay attention to speed limit changes, according to ISP.
ISP also said that if you do get into a crash in the construction area, do not just sit there; try to get to the nearest exit and call them.
”That is one of the biggest issues we’ve seen is people sat in the car, they didn’t know where to go or what to do and that has led to some fatalities. The biggest thing is get somewhere safe don’t just sit there,” Bolen said. “Pay attention, be engaged, but the phone down, really watch the signs, keep that good following distance and just drive slow.”
ITD said the two construction projects will be completed in 2026.
