Gov. Brad Little examines damage from Gwen and Texas fires on board helicopter
NEZ PERCE COUNTY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Gov. Brad Little toured parts of the Gwen and Texas fires to recognize the efforts of the local community and fire personnel in fighting the fires.
The Gwen Fire, which started by lightning last month and is nearly 100% contained, is located east of Lapwai. The Texas Fire, which was human-caused and is 100% contained, is located east of Kendrick.
Both are burning on Idaho Department of Lands acreage on endowment land.
The governor took a helicopter tour and then a fire briefing.
Little said the efforts of the community and fire personnel helped prevent this from worsening.
“It is incredibly important to us that we save first life then property and then all those valuable resources that are out there,” Little said. “I was stuck flying over about the miles and miles and miles of fire line that had been put on by the local farmers. Had they not done that this fire would’ve been enormously larger.”
More information about fires and endowment land can be found on the Idaho Department of Lands website.
