TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —All that snow made for a mess out on the roads Thursday afternoon, creating hazardous conditions for drivers.

Earlier though, those white out conditions did slow down traffic for a while.

The Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) shared some important safety reminders when storms, like Thursdays, hit our area.

Drivers should give themselves additional room between vehicles, and make sure you increase your stopping distance.

Slow down! Especially when there’s fresh snow still on the roadways.

You’ll also want to keep a safe distance from the snow plows clearing the roads, “It’s really important to stay behind the snow plow do not pass on the right, that can be really really detrimental to your vehicle, that snow is coming off that blade incredibly fast and you can get stuck and it can cause a lot of problems,” Courtney Wagner, from ITD said.

ITD adds that drivers make sure they have a full tank of gas before heading out. Also, make sure to pack an emergency kit with things like water, warm clothes, and blankets.

You can check ITD’s website to see the latest road conditions before leaving.

A reminder that most cities prioritize plowing the main roads before they can get to the side streets and in the City of Twin Falls they do not go into neighborhoods.

Also, don’t forget to clear your sidewalks!
