New details on deadly crash in Twin Falls
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — We have new information about the fatal crash that occurred Wednesday evening, after a pickup truck crashed into a home near Blue Lakes Boulevard and 2nd Avenue East, killing the driver and shutting down the roadway during the evening commute.
Twin Falls Police now say 36-year-old Eleazar Perez-Patino was behind the wheel at the time.
Police are still investigating, but said so far it appears speed and a medical condition may have led to the crash, as well as the busy evening rush hour traffic.
“Especially that intersection over there where Blue Lakes kinda goes over into here at 2nd Avenue East,” Tyler Kuder, a traffic safety officer said.
Kuder said their department receives a lot of complaints about Blue Lakes Boulevard, as it gets very congested with traffic. The Twin Falls Police Department said it does station officers near the intersection to deal with stop sign violations.
“Sometimes when traffic gets backed up what the person behind the driver that’s already stopped thinks they can go ahead and go as well,” Kuder said.
Josh Palmer, the Public Information Coordinator with the City of Twin Falls said when they get word of a dangerous intersection or road, the city has a traffic safety team that studies the area.
“It will designate or may designate that a sign should go there or a crosswalk may go there, something may go there to better control that street or intersection to make it safer,” Palmer said.
But when it comes to Blue Lakes, it’s a state highway, meaning the Idaho Transportation Department oversees that review process, at the request of the city. ITD District Engineer Jesse Barrus said they send their own traffic engineer to gather data on the area.
“You look at crash history on those and you see how many crashes, how serious those crashes were, but you also look at volumes. How many cars are going through there every day, in what we call the peak hour. You look at pedestrian volumes,” Barrus said.
That process can take a few months before ITD decides if increased safety measures are needed.
The city said it has previously put in requests to review both Blue Lakes and 2nd Avenue East.
