BOISE, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — AAA is reminding drivers to make sure their vehicles are prepped for cold weather. Freezing weather can cause door locks and rubber seals to freeze shut.

Tires may become underinflated, which may affect handling and traction; tire pressure decreases by approximately one pound per square inch for every 10 degrees the temperature drops.

If your battery is older than three years, it is recommended to get it tested as it may struggle to start the car. Engine fluids may thicken or even freeze resulting in poor engine performance or damage.

To help combat these issues it is recommended to top off engine fluids, which is sometimes offered at the same oil place you regularly go to. It is also advised to switch to a washer fluid that has de-icing ingredients. Keeping your gas tank at least half full and checking tire pressure regularly is also crucial. Use heated seats if your vehicle is equipped with them to help heat the cabin, as well as you.
