When a prohibited item is found in carry-on luggage, TSA officers allow the traveler to put the item in their checked luggage, give it to a non-traveling family member or friend or return it to their vehicle. If none of these options can be done by the traveler, they can abandon the item to TSA for disposal. Anything that resembles an explosive is never allowed on a carry-on or checked baggage.

Firearms can only be transported on a commercial aircraft if they are unloaded, packed in a locked, hard-sided case and placed in checked baggage. During the check-in process, a passenger must go to the airline ticket counter to declare the firearm, ammunition and any firearm parts. It is encouraged for travelers to check gun laws and regulations at their destination to ensure they are following local and state laws.

TSA has additional traveler information specifically related to the transportation of firearms and ammunition. A full summary of TSA’s civil penalties for prohibited items is also available.
