TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Firefighters began an early controlled burn on Tuesday after a small fire in a field near Murtaugh Lake.

A fire was reported at 1:19 p.m. on a plot of land in the Murtaugh Lake County Park, which is owned by Twin Falls County, according to Rock Creek Fire Chief Aaron Zent.

Since firefighters conduct a controlled burn on the same field every spring, Rock Creek Fire District received permission from the county to perform the controlled burn early, Zent said.

Fire crews burned approximately 3 acres of land and contained the fire. There was no threat to nearby property, Zent said.

Zent reminded people that wildfires are still possible in the winter time due to low humidity and winds.

The fire created a cloud of smoke visible from several miles away.
