KETCHUM, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The Forest Service Sawtooth Avalanche Center in Ketchum has extended avalanche warnings until 4 AM Thursday for portions of Blane County and until 6:30 AM Thursday for portions of Camas county.

The avalanche danger is high, and very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. The main locations are: the Salmon River, Sawtooth, Smoky, White Cloud, Boulder, Pioneer and Soldier Mountains - including the mountains near Banner Summit, Atlanta, Stanley, Smiley Creek, Galena Summit, Ketchum, Hailey, Carey, and Fairfield.

Days of heavy snowfall and wind transported snow overloaded with a very weak snowpack. Human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury people are very likely, and natural avalanches are possible. Some avalanches will be large enough to snap trees and damage structures.

Avoid all steep slopes and flat ground below steep slopes, slopes steeper than about 30 degrees. Avalanches may be triggered remotely-- from flat terrain above, below, and to the sides of steep slopes. Natural and human-triggered avalanches may run long distances and can impact the valley bottom.

Consult www.sawtoothavalanche.com or www.avalanche.org for more detailed information. Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area, according to the avalanche center.

Stay tuned for updates about the avalanche warning and winter weather from the KMVT Weather Center.
