DECLO, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Playing college softball was all Saige Wickel ever wanted to do.

The standout senior made that goal a reality and signed to continue her softball career at Bismarck State College.

She quickly signed her letter, which was filled out with nerves and excitement.

“I was a little nervous at the moment, but I’m thrilled,” Wickel told KMVT. “I can’t wait for what the future holds.”

It only made sense to continue playing in college after a decorated three years at Declo.

She was named a then 2A (now 3A) State First-Team selection in 2024, helping Declo to its eighth straight Canyon Conference Championship.

Wickel was hitting .595 as a catcher and, leading with 47 hits and brought in 50 RBIs. She also had a team-leading 17 doubles and was named Declo’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Despite playing multiple sports growing up, she quickly found that softball was her passion.

“It was always just the consistent goal for me to play at the next level,” Wickel explained. “I’ve just always loved softball the most. There’s something about being on the field with different people, and all my friends and I loved it.”

Along with playing high school ball, she played summer ball in Minico for the ‘Bomb Squad.’

She credits her high school and club coaches for getting the best out of her by pushing her to succeed each day.

“It was always amazing how much they pushed me to be better. “It helped me to get to this position and rise to the next level.”

In college, she plans to pursue nursing.

The softball season starts on Feb. 28, and she and the Hornets are excited to get back on the field.
