House Democrats outline priorities for 119th Congress
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries re-elected to top spot for Democrats
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - House Democrats say their focus for the next two years is bringing down the high cost of living.
The same leadership team that led House Democrats in the 118th Congress is still intact for the 119th Congress. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) elected to lead Democrats for another two years.
Leader Jeffries laid out the agenda for Democrats at a press conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday, saying their primary focus is bringing down inflation..
“We are prepared to work hard to find bipartisan common ground with our Republican colleagues and the incoming Administration on any issue whenever and wherever possible. But at the same time we will push back against far right extremism whenever necessary.
In response to a question from Gray Television’s Jon Decker, Jeffries said Democrats acknowledge that border security remains a high priority for voters.
“We should secure the border in a bipartisan way that meets the needs of the American people, that right sizes our immigration system, and that ensures we can enact the kind of comprehensive immigration reform that allows for legal pathways toward citizenship that the American people support but at the same period of time addresses the challenges that we’ve clearly seen on the southern border.”
Jeffries said the first priority for Congress is passing a funding bill by December 20th to keep the government open. For Democrats, the new year will bring with it many challenges as Republicans will control both Chambers of Congress and the White House.
