Trump confirms deportation plans
President-elect posted promise on social media
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Donald Trump is preparing to fulfill promise that he made on the campaign trail. He is confirming that he plans to deport scores of migrants who entered the U.S. illegally.
Early Monday morning, president-elect Trump indicated on Truth Social, his social media platform, that he will declare an immigration national emergency among his first acts as president. That declaration could potentially mobilize the National Guard to assist with the deportation effort.
Trump made border security the centerpiece of his presidential campaign.
Before the election, at a rally at Madison Square Garden, Trump voted to supporters, “on day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out. I will rescue every city and town that has been invaded and conquered, and we will put these vicious and bloodthirsty criminals in jail, then kick them the hell out of our country as fast as possible.”
The Pew Research Center estimates that the unauthorized immigrant population in the U.S. has grown to least 11 million.
Removing those migrants could potentially lead to labor shortages and could cost tens of billions of dollars per year. Such a plan has been criticized by Democrats who argue that mass deportations would have a negative impact on the U.S. economy.
