Another Trump case put on hold
Judge Chutkan agrees to motion by Special Counsel Jack Smith
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Some of President-elect Donald Trump’s criminal legal problems could soon be going away.
Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election has forced Special Counsel Jack Smith to consider ending the criminal election interference case against him.
Responding to a motion from the special counsel, a federal judge in Washington has agreed to pause the criminal case against president-elect Donald Trump.
In a legal filing, the Special Counsel said he needs time to assess what he called the “unprecedented circumstance” of Trump’s victory in Tuesday’s presidential election.
U.S. Department of Justice policy effectively bars prosecuting a president while in office.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to four counts of trying to subvert the results of the 2020 election.
The case stems from allegations concerning how then-President Donald Trump did or did not take action when his supporters marched to the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Hundreds have been charged with destroying government property and trying to interfere with official proceedings.
