ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC/Gray News) – A high school sophomore is recovering after a successful heart transplant over the weekend.

Braxton Wohlferd is a student-athlete at St. Charles High School. He has been in intensive care at the Mayo Clinic-St. Marys since Jan. 15, when he suddenly fell ill.

It was later determined Wohlferd was suffering from an unspecified virus that had attacked his heart. According to his GoFundMe page, he was considered a high priority for a transplant.

The latest post on Wohlferd’s CaringBridge page said that the transplant was successful and that his heart is “working very well.”

“The transplant and cardiology teams both said it couldn’t be a better heart,” the latest post on his CaringBridge page stated. “We pray for the family grieving the loss of their loved one and thank them from the bottom of our hearts for this gift of life for Braxton.”

The post, dated Jan. 21, also said Wohlferd’s kidneys are still not working and that he remains on dialysis.

“They keep telling us this is a marathon and we are just in the first mile,” the post said. “We appreciate you cheering and praying for Brax and his family from the sideline.”

As of Monday evening, nearly $80,000 had been donated to Wohlferd’s GoFundMe.
