SEWARD, Neb. (KOLN/Gray News) - A woman was killed in Nebraska over the weekend in what state patrol believes was a murder-suicide attempt by her ex-fiancé.

Nebraska State Patrol said 36-year-old Jamie Hagen was found dead Saturday at her home with multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities also found 54-year-old Casey Kindt with what they described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hagen’s family said she did everything possible to protect herself and her children from Kindt, her ex-fiancé.

“She talked to the police department, she got the restraining order, got the victim’s unit involved. Local law enforcement has all been awesome here,” Hagen’s father, Charles Hagen said. “She did everything right, but it didn’t really do any good.”

Court documents show Jamie Hagen had filed a protection order against Kindt two days after he allegedly assaulted her and threatened her and her daughter on Dec. 16, 2024.

Kindt was charged with making terroristic threats, third-degree domestic assault resulting in injuries, and child abuse without injury.

“They were going to get married. They bought a house together. But things just started shifting a different way and he started getting aggressive I guess,” Charles Hagen said. “I don’t know 100% of the story and some of the hidden things, and some of the other things are starting to come out now.”

An arrest affidavit states that Kindt posted bond after the alleged assault but was taken back into custody in early January for violating his bond by contacting Hagen.

Authorities said Casey Kindt is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Prosecutors sought to have Kindt’s bond revoked, but Judge C. Jo Petersen instead increased it to $75,000.

Kindt posted bond on Friday and is accused of killing Hagen the next day.

Police said a juvenile at the home made the 911 call.

Charles Hagen said his daughter was let down by the justice system.

“He was put in jail twice over this and still posted bond. If he’d just stayed in there this wouldn’t have happened,” he said.

Jamie Hagen and Kindt got engaged following a two-year relationship. Court records show Kindt was prohibited from possessing a firearm at the time of the shooting.

Kindt is receiving treatment at an area hospital for life-threatening injuries from the shooting. The Nebraska State Patrol said it is conducting the homicide investigation.

To help cover funeral expenses and care for Jamie Hagen’s daughters, friends and family have set up a memorial fund at Union Bank & Trust in Seward. The family said anyone interested in donating can contact a bank representative at (402) 643-2954.
