Dog euthanized after being found shot and abandoned in trash bag, animal rescuers say
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA/Gray News) - An animal rescue group in Alabama says an injured pit bull has died after it was left on the side of the road in a trash bag over the weekend.
A video of the dog being found started making its rounds on social media.
Brooke Whitehurst said she saw the video and immediately contacted the person who found him.
“I did not realize how bad of shape the dog was in until I actually saw him,” she said.
Whitehurst said she took the injured pup to the Semmes Animal Hospital. His skin and eyes were both red.
“I just I knew I had to get him help because I didn’t know how long he was going to hang on,” she said.
Whitehurst said the look in his eyes showed fear, but she wanted to give him a name that was hopeful. So, she decided to name him Chance.
However, on Tuesday, rescuers with Wags and Whiskers said Chance could not survive his injuries despite getting veterinarian care and had to be euthanized.
The team said X-rays showed Chance was suffering multiple injuries, including being shot in the head.
“The bullet fractured the skull and was lodged in the brain, causing swelling and a traumatic brain injury that Chance could never recover from,” the rescue team shared.
According to rescuers, the entry wound for the bullet had already healed and veterinarians said Chance had been suffering for at least 10 days.
The animal rescue has since started a Justice for Chance campaign that includes raising reward money to help catch the person or persons responsible for injuring the pit bull.
