CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS/Gray News) - A Missouri woman has been charged with felony abuse in the death of her young child.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 21-year-old Alyssa Wehmeyer is currently being held in the Scott County Jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond.

She is facing one count of abuse or neglect of a child, resulting in death.

Wehmeyer’s charge is the result of an investigation conducted by the Troop E Criminal Investigations Unit of MSHP’s Division of Drug and Crime Control.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department requested that MSHP look into the child’s “suspicious death” earlier this week.

According to court records, Wehmeyer is accused of not feeding her 1-year-old child for more than 36 hours.

Court documents also stated that Wehmeyer told police she left the child in its crib unattended for nearly 19 hours.

Wehmeyer is scheduled to make her first court appearance Thursday morning.
