‘Incredibly grateful’: Driver helps kids escape school bus that caught fire on way to school
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - Officials in Ohio say a school bus driver helped students safely get off a bus that caught fire Thursday morning.
Bus No. 21 was on its way to Monticello Middle School when it burst into flames at the corner of Cambridge and Northhampton Roads.
Firefighters were called to the scene and extinguished the fire, but not before the bus became engulfed in flames.
Cleveland Heights-University Heights Superintendent Liz Kirby credited the bus driver’s “quick actions” for helping prevent any injuries.
“I can’t express how relieved I am that no one was hurt, and I am incredibly grateful for the quick response from the driver,” Kirby said in a statement. “I spoke with the driver today, and they credited the annual bus evacuation drills they do with students with preparing them.”
Officials said the bus had a routine inspection by the Ohio State Highway Patrol on Feb. 14.
Kirby said Thursday’s fire started behind one of the rear wheels of the bus, with the official cause remaining under investigation.
Fifteen students were on the bus heading to Monticello Middle School when the bus caught fire. They were picked up by another district vehicle and taken to school.
“I am truly thankful for the safety of our students and thoughtful action from the adults who care for them,“ Kirby said.
