MONROE COUNTY, Mich. (WTVG/Gray News) - A 19-year-old mom and her baby died after a crash in Michigan, according to authorities.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning on S. Custer Road, east of Lewis Ave., in Monroe County.

A baby girl, identified by family members as 3-month-old daughter Alanee and 19-year-old Journee Padgett died from their injuries, WTVG reported.

Authorities said Padgett was driving east when her car crossed the centerline, hitting a tractor with tandem trailers head-on.

The sheriff’s office said it’s unknown why she went left of center, but neither alcohol nor speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.

The 19-year-old woman died at the scene and the baby died at the hospital.

A 58-year-old man who was driving the tractor was not injured.

Investigators said the baby was properly secured in a rear-facing car seat at the time of the crash and the airbags in the car did go off.

A family friend of Padgett’s started a GoFundMe for her and her daughter’s funerals.
