Couple found dead after avalanche near snowmobile trail in Oregon
BEND Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - Deputies in Oregon say two people were found dead after an avalanche near a snowmobile trail.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday reported an avalanche burial near the Broken Top area west of Bend.
The Central Oregon Avalanche Center shared in a social media post that the area is near a snowmobile trail in Oregon’s Central Cascade Mountains.
The avalanche happened at 6,700 ft. on a south-facing slope, the Central Oregon Avalanche Center wrote in a release.
Rescue crews began searching the area for anyone who possibly was buried underneath the snow.
The couple was skiing at the time of the incident. Their names have not yet been released.
“We extend our deepest condolences to all who loved the couple who tragically lost their lives while doing what they loved,” added the Avalanche Center. “As longtime residents of Central Oregon, they have touched many lives, and their legacy will continue to live on in our community.”
The sheriff’s office asked the public to avoid the area and be aware of avalanche danger in the Central Cascades area.
