Michigan legislator introduces resolution calling on Supreme Court to overturn same-sex marriage

LANSING, Mich. (Gray News) – A Republican representative from Michigan said he plans to introduce a resolution urging the United States Supreme Court to overturn the 2015 court case ruling that protects same-sex marriage.
Rep. Josh Schriver introduced a resolution Tuesday in the state House condemning the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that has stood for nearly a decade.
The resolution was also shared in a post made on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Schriver’s account.
The 5-4 ruling was made on June 26, 2015, and declared that the 14th Amendment requires all states to perform same-sex marriages and recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
The resolution has 12 co-sponsors, according to the representative’s office. Similar resolutions have also been introduced in other states, including Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Resolutions are a way for lawmakers to communicate their position on an issue.
“The new resolution urges the preservation of the sanctity of marriage and constitutional protections that ensure freedom of conscience for all Michigan residents,” Schriver said in the release.
Schriver has spoken out against the ruling in the past, making posts on social media saying “Make gay marriage illegal again” in December 2024 and doubled down in a second post which said, “America only ‘accepted’ gay marriage after it was thrust onto her by a perverted Supreme Court ruling. America 2124 doesn’t have to be as dysfunctional as America 2024.”
Schriver also said he believes the 2015 Supreme Court ruling negatively affects children.
The future of the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling has been in discussion ever since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022, with Justice Clarence Thomas suggesting that the decision could lead to the review of other landmark cases.
