Hunting guide shot, killed by another hunter during trip, deputies say
HALFWAY, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) – A hunting guide was shot and killed during an elk hunting trip in northeastern Oregon, according to deputies.
The shooting happened before 8 a.m. on Nov. 10 near the city of Halfway, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jon Nichols, 62, was guiding a hunting party of two other men on private property along Fish Creek, deputies said.
The three men were riding together in a side-by-side vehicle when they spotted a herd of elk.
They got out of the vehicle and one of the men reportedly chambered a round in his rifle, which went off, hitting Nichols in the back.
The men performed CPR on Nichols, but he was dead when deputies arrived.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.
