Idahoans have two months to get their Star Card
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The countdown is on until you will need a “Star Card,” also known as a “Real ID,” if you want to board a flight or enter a federal building.
“A Star Card is actually really important because it is a federally accepted form of identification,” says Idaho Transportation Department public information officer, Courtney Wagner.
The “Star Card” looks similar to your Idaho driver’s license but has a gold star in the upper right-hand corner. The Idaho Transportation Department says both allow you to drive, as well as the ability to buy alcohol and register to vote.
“This one is just going to take the place of a regular driver’s license, making it federally acceptable, proving that you have done the steps to prove that you are who you are,” says Wagner.
According to The Department of Motor Vehicles, you do need to bring in a few documents with you in order to get your card. That includes your birth certificate, your social security card and two proofs of Idaho residency, which could be a mortgage statement or a utility bill.
“Now if you been married and divorced, you also have to have your certified marriage and divorce licenses as well,” says Wagner.
According to ITD, a star card is also TSA approved for domestic flights leaving Idaho, and beginning May 7th you’ll need a “Star Card” to fly.
A statement from the Twin Falls DMV office reads in part quote:
“People are encouraged to obtain their star card before deadline. if you want to board a plane, enter any federal office or be allowed on any military base, you must have a star on your license. Please give yourself enough time to get your Star Card in the mail before the deadline.”
ITD says about half of Idahoans do not have a Star Card yet. Again, that deadline is May 7th. For more information click here.
