TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The decision on a new map for school zones in Twin Falls School District was finalized on Monday. The board of trustees voted in favor of the draft.

The decision comes after Bickel Elementary faced a potential closure. The school district is turning Bickel into a magnet school to save the historic building.

According to the district office, Bickel Elementary becoming a magnet school will require around 100 students to relocate to other schools. Bickel will admit students through a lottery system that will begin in May. The district said parental feedback was a significant factor in drafting the new zones.

“We had fairly limited comments that came in through that survey, so a couple of things you can take away from that is I think most people found the boundaries to be logical, there weren’t a lot of options of where to draw those boundaries,” said Superintendent Brady Dickinson.

The board has also finalized decisions on Bickel’s next principal. They announced that Jorge Pulleiro, the associate principal at Twin Falls High School, has been selected as the new principal for the dual immersion program.

The decision was approved at Monday’s school board meeting. Bickel’s new dual immersion program will allow students to become fluent in English and Spanish.

According to the district, students in the program receive instruction in both languages, preparing them to thrive in an increasingly global society.

Dickinson also said parents will receive new information on bussing routes and other pertinent details for next fall in the coming weeks. They will also have the opportunity to tour schools in their children’s new zone.

The district will host a Dual Immersion Meet & Greet at Oregon Trail Elementary School Gym on March 11, 6 p.m., to welcome Pulleiro and provide families with essential updates.
