Albion fights flooding after warm temperatures arrive

ALBION, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The recent change in weather has led to flooding problems for Albion.
The National Weather Service reissued a flood advisory for Cassia County through Wednesday until 1 p.m. The NWS expects temperatures to drop below freezing over Tuesday night, helping to slow additional runoff.
Some roads had up to a foot of water Sunday night, according to city officials. One man also died on Monday after suffering a heart attack while shoveling water off his property.
“With the warmer weather and the rain coming in, it started to look like flooding that picked up through the night,” said Dallan Doc Carlson, an Albion councilman and firefighter. “We had quite a few breakthroughs down on Whitman and started pushing over the road as well as some more flooding down here, and the rain really drove that over.”
The flooding has damaged many homes and other properties in the Albion area. Mark Catmull is one of the homeowners left cleaning up after this mess.
“The water was about 5 feet above the bridge here, roaring through here last night, worse than we ever seen through here, about $20,000 in damages,” Catmull said.
Catmull said that the city of Albion had been preparing for the chance of flooding days in advance, placing more than 2,000 sandbags over the weekend.
“You can see water still flooding here on this dry creek, it’s usually dry here and it tore this bridge out here,” Catmull said. “This whole road was completely covered with water here.”
The city came together on Monday to prepare and place more sandbags throughout the town to try and protect the area from the risk of possible flooding.
“We could see some more flooding as the week goes on,” Doc Carlson said. “The week is set to bring in some warmer temperatures. We have a really good community here. A lot of us really pull together so I don’t think we’ll be in a shortage of having people willing to help.”
On Tuesday, the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office reminded people that sandbags are still available to anyone in the county.
They are located at Albion City Park, just off Main Street and South Street.
The sheriff’s office also advised people to be cautious around running water and avoid driving over sandbags along roads.
