Winter storm warning has cities in Idaho planning ahead
Southern Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories active here in Southern Idaho. While some areas may receive little to no snow, cities like Jerome are expected to receive well over three inches between Thursday and Friday.
“We have already started prepping and they’re already shooting brine on the streets and priority routes,” says Public Works Supervisor, Ronnie Hendricks.
City of Jerome’s public works office is asking residents to remember to clear the streets while they’re out plowing snow.
“If we have a chance after, then we’ll do the residential routs put the problem is with parking and the blue dumpsters are always an issue,’ says Hendricks.
Meanwhile, Mountain Home residents can expect between six and 12 inches of snow. The city’s public works department is keeping an eye on the weather in the event of prepping the roads overnight.
“We have an emergency plan that we follow. The City of Mountain Home has a couple of different snowplows that we keep filled with sand, we prep them ahead of time, we’re actually working on it today because we know we have a storm coming in,” says Mountain Home Publick Works Director, Chris Curtis.
Unlike Jerome, Mountain Home only focuses on priority routes.
“We also work in conjunction to the Idaho Department of Transportation because a couple of our main roadways are ITD roadways, so they have sanders that are located in a local area, and they help us maintain those main areas,” says Curtis.
The Idaho Department of Transportation is also getting all of their trucks up and running just in case.
“If it is determined to pre-treat the roads, which it’s not determined right now-- what we will do is put salt brine down before hand, but that’s determined by the storm, they length of the storm and temperatures,” says ITD’s Public Relations, Courtney Wagner.
Remember if you do have to drive in these incoming weather conditions-- to plan ahead, drive slowly and keep a safe distance from other vehicles, including the snowplows.
