TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Spring is here in Southern Idaho and in this week’s Salute to Idaho Agriculture, we have some tips to give you the best chance at having a beautiful green lawn this year.

If you’re looking to get a head start on your perfect lawn, there are a few things that you should know.

First is that grass is a weed and does not need that much outside of water and sunlight in order to grow and grow quickly.

Second there is always the risk of overwatering your yard and the ideal range according to most lawncare professionals is four-to-six inches deep immediately after seeding.

The timing that this all takes place is also a big factor in the success of a lawn, that’s why it is important to understand which variety of grass you are planting.

A local lawn care business owner spoke to KMVT about the methods he uses to give the yards he services a head start.

“If you want an early start, last week I cut my own lawn and a few of my customers, you can fertilize the yard and that will give it a head start to green it up, make it healthier, just make it grow quicker than it normally would. Then of course there’s the weed and feed which will do the same to some extent and attack the dandelions and that kind of stuff,” said Andrew Gillam, the owner of Andy’s Yard Service.

Gillam also added to read the labels and instructions of any weed killing product that you purchase from a store because oftentimes the cheaper versions of these products kill your grass in addition to the troublesome weeds.
