Executive order set to impact the Refugee Admissions Program
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — President Donald Trump has already signed a number of executive orders and one of which is set to impact the United States Refugee Admissions Program.
The order suspends the program beginning on Monday and limits who is allowed into the country.
According to the Associated Press more than ten thousand refugees from around the world had already received clearance to come to the U.S., but some have had their travel plans canceled by the Trump Administration.
We spoke with the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, a nonprofit group here in Twin Falls, about the impacts the executive order will have locally.
“Once there is a ban in the program it will affect our funding so it will affect our ability to serve clients that are already here. We do provide a lot of services to our clients to make sure they’re self-sufficient, and those services will be impacted as we will probably see reduced funding in the coming months,” said Chandra Upreti, the Director of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.
Right now it’s not clear if any refugees who planned to travel to our area or state have have had their travel plans canceled.
The executive order does call for reviewing whether to resume the entry of refugees into the U.S. in 90 days.
