Mental Health Minute: College major and school decisions
WENDELL, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — For the high school class of 2025 college is right around the corner, but the process of choosing a school and major can be stressful.
In this week’s “mental health minute” we spoke with high school counselors to get advice for those who are undecided.
Choosing a college and what you’ll study are some of the most important choices the graduating class of 2025 will make. While some students already know the path they want to take, others are still struggling.
Kevin Connor, Wendell High School’s counselor says an important thing to remember is to slow down.
“First off you have to realize you’re still a kid. Enjoy your senior year, enjoy what you can, but when you’re thinking about the future, you’re not picking anything specific, you’re picking kind of a direction,” said Connor.
When it comes to choosing which university or college to attend, Twin Falls High School counselor Christi Benson says there are several key things to keep in mind.
“When choosing a college, students are often waiting for their financial aid packages and that’s okay to wait for that information to come to be able to choose a college, so it hopefully helps the stress level go down. And of course, getting your parents to help and your counselors and advisors at school to talk to about those things helps lessen that stress.”
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, college students change their major three times on average and Connor says there’s no need to commit too early.
“Pick out some things that sound fun and let your heart lead you where it goes because you’re going to be doing this job for a long time so you might as well find something you enjoy,” Connor said.
That advice goes for seniors heading off to college or who have other plans after graduation.
“It’s tough decisions that they have coming, but they’re also okay if they don’t make the right one right now,” Connor said.
