Salute to Idaho Agriculture - Barley
Idaho Preferred Holiday Baskets
FILER, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Clark Kauffman has been making his “hearty barley soup” for more than a decade. His product is being featured in the Idaho Preferred holiday basket, a program to promote food and agriculture products grown in Idaho.
Kauffman explains the importance of the label, “Idaho preferred is a great marketing tool, it’s on our label, people can go to Idaho preferred, and you’re listed there as a producer with the products you grow so people can contact you if they need what you have.”
Kauffman’s farm is located in Filer, where he grows more than just barley, “Malt barley, and then the hulless barley for soup, pumpkins, sweet corn, silage corn, peas, dried beans and a lot of alfalfa.”
He packages the soup right on his farm. The barley is cleaned in barrels, then mixed with a special reciepe that includes lentils, carrots, onions and alfalfa. The mixture is then weighed out, bagged, labeled and sent out.
With the Idaho Preferred designation, Kauffman recognizes its importance, “I really appreciate Idaho Preferred and work that they do, and the department of ag does for local farmers.”
