JEROME, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Even though growing season has ended, there are a few items around the garden that still need some attention.

“Enjoy the snow, this is garden rest season, for me I usually start planning my garden this time of year,” said Adam Thompson, retail manager at Moss Greenhouse. Before the ground freezes there are some tasks Thompson suggests; draining and storing the garden hose, raking leaves and adding them to the garden bed for compost.

Another option is to plant hardy plants and blubs. However fall isn’t just for flowers, there are many other plants that can be planted during the season.

“You can plant onions, beats garlic, all this time of year, by seed or by little bulbs, and essentially what happens is that they kind of get set up, and then go through the winter, and then they get that early start in the spring.”

While spring cleaning is common, fall is also a great time to put away some decorations and ceramic pots that might be vulnerable to the cold.

For Moss Greenhouse, springtime is a busy season so they focus on cleaning the first two months after the growing season. Afterward, their focus is more administrative work.

“Now, we are starting to get into more office stuff with the weather turning. Now we start looking at pricing, scheduling for next year, we start buying in plant materials”

Thompson also adds that gardening provides a lot more benefits than just putting seeds in the ground “It’s good mindfulness practice, as humans we like to rush everything, and you cant rush plants, you can rush a garden. So I think learning that cadence with plants and plant life it brings you lot of patience”
