Salute to Idaho Agriculture: FFA
Southern Magic Valley FFA district livestock evalutation
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — “It’s an opportunity for students to develop some personal leadership, build their confidence, find a spot that maybe is their niche or their expertise that they want to develop, as they pursue future careers,” says Joseph Maxwell, a Kimberly FFA advisor.
More than 100 students from around the Magic Valley came together Wednesday at the CSI Expo Center for the district’s livestock evaluation. During the event, students tested their skills in evaluating livestock and other animals.
Maxwell spoke about some of the skills a student might learn in FFA: “The animal part is what brings students in because it might be their passion or their interest. What skills were really talking about developing are decision making, their ability to go through, take in different indicators, different things they see, and assign and assess value to those to determine which decision is to make best” Mylee Porath, also part of the Kimberly FFA, says the program has helped her learn a lot over the years, “Through FFA, I’ve learned many different leadership skills, like how to talk in front of people, and talk to other people but also to work as a team, I’m on several different officer teams, and I have been since I was a sophomore in high school, and it’s been very good for me to get to know people, get to talk to people and learn life skills” As the agriculture industry evolves, Maxwell points to the importance of keeping students engaged in programs like FFA: “That industry is going to come with change, and it is going to come from change in these young people getting involved and figuring out their role and place in the industry to help us continue to feeding America, that’s the goal”
