Salute to Idaho Agriculture: Farm to School month
October is Idaho Farm to School month
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Having the Governor proclaim October as Idaho’s Farm to School Month helps bring focus to its importance. Pamela Murray is the farm-to-school program coordinator for the Idaho Department of Education. She’s doing everything she can to raise awareness for the program that allows locally produced food to hit the lunch trays of Idaho’s students.
Murray says it not only provides access to local food but also provides hands-on education, field trips, and more. “It improves their nutrition; when you have your food closer to home it doesn’t spend days or weeks on a truck getting transported across the country.”
Murray adds that a key part of improving nutrition comes as students get to enjoy more fruits and vegetables, thanks to the program. It’s not just students who benefit.
Murray said, “also, by participating in school meals you’re directly supporting farmers in the community.” With fresh produce on the table, the farm-to-school program provides important opportunities for both students and farmers with a focus on nutrition and education.
