TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Strokes are a common but serious condition. When one happens, every second counts, so it is essential to know the signs.

St. Luke’s doctors recommend using the acronym BE FAST to recognize the signs.

It stands for balance, eyes, face, arm, speech, and time. Stroke symptoms often include a sudden loss of balance, changes in vision, weakness in the face, arm, or leg, and difficulty speaking. If you see these, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Corey Lindberg, an emergency physician at St. Luke’s, explained the fastest way to help a stroke victim.

“The quickest way to be evaluated for a stroke is to call 911,” Lindberg said. “Dial 911, get evaluated by a paramedic. They may actually start some of the procedures which are placing an IV, getting labs drawn, checking your vital signs.”

Doctors say stroke symptoms have no warning, and each minute that passes can seriously impact your brain function. They also urge people suffering from a stroke to not drive themselves, as it can be dangerous for you and other people on the roads.
