TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Protein is an essential part of your daily diet, but you might not be getting enough of it. That is the focus of this week’s Fit and Well Idaho report.

St. Luke’s clinical dietitian says protein is a key macronutrient that helps us stay healthy. It is recommended that women eat around 46 grams of protein a day and for men 56 grams.

Other groups, like those who exercise regularly and pregnant women, might need more than the recommended amounts.

“Protein is vital for all of our body functions; we use it in every cell in our body,” St. Luke’s Clinical Dietician Olivia Cox said. “I like to think of it as little building blocks of our muscles or tissues our skin and everything we do requires protein.”

Some examples of good protein sources include meat, eggs, and dairy. Also, some plants like nuts and beans. Talk to a registered dietitian to find out the appropriate amount of protein for you.
