Jerome, Gooding, and Kimberly girls fall in first round of High School State Tournament

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — It wasn’t meant to be in the state tournament for the Sawtooth Central Idaho teams.

Both No. 5 Kimberly, and No. 8 Gooding suffered defeats in the opening round of the 4A State Tournament.

Gooding opened between the two with the Task of taking on undefeated No. 1 Sugar-Salem.

The Diggers came to play and showed why they were the top team in the state winning 68-28.

Gooding was held to only three points in the first half.

Sugar-Salem shot lights out, shooting 49.1 percent from the field in the win.

Freshman Camyrn Rycraft had a team-high eight points.

Next game to follow was the No. 5 Kimberly girls basketball team who was in a dog fight with No. 4 Timberlake.

It was a shootout throughout the first quarter as the Tigers led 20-16.

Kimberly trailed by as many as 10 points in the game but would battle and be within seven with just minutes to go in regulation.

Sophomore Taya Plew hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to four with just minutes to go.

The Bulldogs would have the opportunity to pull within one score but couldn’t hit the shots when they needed.

Kimberly would fall in the end losing to 53-44.

Plew finished with a team-high 18 points and collected seven rebounds.

Senior Berkley Dille would add 11.

Hope Ward and Ady Osborne had eight rebounds each.

The Bulldogs and Senators will meet in a consolation game Friday at 2:00.

Earlier in the day in 5A, the No. 7 Jerome Tigers had a Great Basin Championship rematch with No. 2 Mountain Home.

After a back-and-forth first half, Mountain Home would pull away and beat Jerome for the fourth time this season winning 50-39.

Freshman Sawyer Garrad led the Tigers with 10 points while Jensen Cook had nine.

Jerome battled but struggled from the field shooting 26 percent. The Tigers will now play No. 3 Sandpoint at noon on Friday in the consolation round.
