Oakley Lady Hornets enter 2A State Tournament as team to beat
OAKLEY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Entering a state tournament is never easy as the No. 1 overall team, but the Oakley Lady Hornets are ready for the task.
The Hornets have looked dominant all year.
Oakley finished the year with a 21-1 record, the lone loss coming to Valley by three points. The Hornets would get them back, beating the Vikings 59-31 to claim its third straight Snake River Championship.
Now off to a fourth straight tournament appearance, the Hornets will rely on the chemistry to strengthen them.
“Compared to our team last year, we’ve all played together with this group of girls since 5th, 6th grade,” junior guard Livee Berlinguet told KMVT. “This group is special.”
Oakley was the consolation champion in 2022 and runners-up in 2023.
The Hornets find success moving the basketball in transition. When the hornets are moving quickly, no team in the state can stop them.
Oakley is allowing just over 30 points a game, which ranks third in 2A.
With their experience building up with the upperclassmen and their brand of basketball, Oakley will be a tough team to beat.
“We all have grown and have plenty more experience than last year,” junior Taylin Beck said. “We play Oakley basketball,” senior Chloe Berlin added. “We do the small things like rebound, limit turnovers, and focus on our defense.”
Oakley enters the 2A state tournament as No. 1 and will square off against No. 8 Wilder in the first round Thursday at 5:00 from Columbia High School.
