ALBION, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — How did the weather this past weekend impact our area ski resorts?

This past weekend, the rainy weather in the Magic Valley was more than welcome for ski resorts in higher elevations, such as Pomerelle Mountain in Albion, where the lower temperatures turned most of that rain into snow.

“When there’s new snow, it’s hard to deter people,” said Pomerelle Mountain Manager Zack Alexander. “It doesn’t matter if it’s heavy, wet or blower powder. When there’s new snow, people are excited to get out on it.”

Alexander said the total snowfall was 17 inches, and they probably would have seen more if the snow had continued to fall.

“It got a little warm on us late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, and kind of knocked some of that pack down a little bit,” Alexander said.

Warm temperatures continued into Monday afternoon as the resort’s website had a temperature reading of 50 degrees Fahrenheit one hour before closing.

Despite this, the overnight lows were conducive to good skiing and snowboarding.

“The temperatures did cool down this morning, and the grooming is coming out fantastic,” Alexander said. “So, if you were here Sunday, the skiing was a little bit heavier than it’s been. However, that’s changed today, and we’re back to the nice, light turns that we’re used to. Especially up top.”

One of the snowboarders on the mountain this afternoon was Edison Tatton, a member of Pomerelle’s Homeschool Skiing Program. He talked about the conditions and what brought him to the slopes.

“It snowed pretty good over the weekend, so I figured I’d come down and do a few runs,” Tatton said. “There’s some good powder up there. They built some good jumps with all the snow, and it’s in great condition.”

Alexander added that the conditions for skiing are fantastic and that this past weekend was a welcome change from the lack of snow in January. Still, the skiing weather is not done yet.

“Throughout the weekend, we’re supposed to see quite a bit more snow, and again, it’s from colder temperatures, Alexander said. “So, for all of our avid skiers, boarders that are ready for some of that blower pow, it’s coming; be ready this weekend.”
