SALMON, Idaho - There were five new fires reported on the Salmon-Challis National Forest in the last week. To date, there have been eight wildfires reported on the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Seven of the fires have been declared out.

Loon (July 7) - The lightning fire is located approximately 38 miles northwest of Challis in the West Fork of Little Loon Creek on the Middle Fork Ranger District in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. 16 firefighters are on scene working to suppress the five acre fire burning in grass, brush, and timber.

Bull Spring (July 4) - The lightning fire was located approximately 24 miles southwest of Salmon on the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District. The 0.10 acre fire burning in lodgepole pine is out.

Aparejo (July 3) - The lightning fire was located approximately 44 miles southwest of Salmon on the North Fork Ranger District in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The 9 acre fire burning in Douglas fir and grass is out.

Jenny (July 2) - The lightning fire was located approximately 39 miles southwest of Salmon on the North Fork Ranger District in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The 0.10 acre fire burning in a single tree is out.

Bernard (July 1) - The lightning fire was located approximately 43 miles northwest of Challis on the Middle Fork Ranger District in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The 0.10 acre fire burning in grass and lodgepole pine is out.

Cat Canyon (June 13) - The lightning fire was located approximately 21 miles southeast of Challis on the Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger District. The 11 acre fire burning in lodgepole pine and Douglas Fir is out.

Weather: Hot and dry conditions expected throughout the week. Excessive heat and dry conditions will persist throughout the week. Temperatures will reach well above climatological norms and relative humidity will range single digits and teens. Winds will remain light through mid-week but will increase Wednesday ahead of a system that will bring chances for dry thunderstorms late week.

Nationally, there are 25 uncontained large fires being managed under a full suppression strategy and 48 large fires managed under a strategy other than full suppression.
