SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (KMVT/KSVT) — A Utah Highway Patrol Trooper was seriously injured on Tuesday in Salt Lake City after falling off an overpass on Interstate 80, according to KUTV.

The incident happened when Utah Highway Patrol was attempting to help Salt Lake City police catch an SUV by deploying spikes, according to KUTV.

Authorities said the driver of the SUV was taken into custody a short time after hitting a Salt Lake City police car causing minor damage to the vehicle but that officer was not injured.

The Utah Highway Patrol on Wednesday identified Trooper Steve Myer, a 34-year patrol veteran, and said he fell from an overpass near I-80 while placing a spike strip during a drug investigation.

The statement added that “He will have a long road to recovery but is expected to recover from this incident.”
