TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield said she would like to see some changes this session when it comes to student funding.

Critchfield plans to bring legislation forward that would allow her to send a part of the budget to schools based on the types of students they serve.

Children with special needs, English language learners along with gifted and talented programs cost districts more money.

Critchfield said the state currently funds every student as if they are the same.

“I want to change that up and without legislative approval, I can’t do anything than what the law tells me now of course,” Critchfield said. “I’m excited to bring something forward that I feel aligns with the priorities and needs that our districts and charters need today.”

It is using the same budget, with the annual increases, to send money out in a better way for public schools and charters.

She said this would allow districts to plan their budget and prioritize their needs.
