Idaho House approves memorial calling on Supreme Court to overturn gay marriage decision
BOISE, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The Idaho House of Representatives passed a joint memorial on Monday to advise the Supreme Court to overturn the right to gay marriage.
The House voted 46-24 to pass House Joint Memorial 1, which calls upon the Supreme Court to reverse the decision in Obergefell v. Hodges and restore “the natural definition of marriage, a union of one man and one woman”.
The memorial argues that the Obergefell ruling “invokes a definition of ‘liberty’ that the framers would not have recognized.”
The document also argues that the case undermines the Declaration of Independence’s vision by “declaring that citizens must seek dignity from the state.”
Local members who voted to pass the joint memorial include Rep. Clint Hostetler, R-24; Rep. Steve Miller, R-24; Rep. Lance Clow, R-25; Rep. David Leavitt, R-25; Rep. Mike Pohanka, R-26; and Rep. Douglas Pickett, R-27, according to the Idaho Legislature website.
Rep. Jack Nelsen, R-26, and Rep. Clay Handy, R-27, voted to reject the memorial.
The joint memorial is awaiting a hearing from the Idaho Senate.
