RUPERT, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Minico High School’s athletic programs have a long history of success, and one man by the name of Greer Copeland has given countless hours of his time back to the school, and as such he is being rewarded by having the school’s athletic complex named after him.

“When you name something that’s been there, it adds new life to it. And when you name it after someone as positive as Greer in everything he’s done, you’re bringing something so new that you’ll just see the area light up,” said Minico Athletic Director Brady Trenkle.

Greer Copeland coached baseball and softball at his alma mater of Minico High School and has worked thousands of hours for the school, for free no less, helping to build athletic facilities for the Spartans.

“He has helped with the lights on the varsity field, he basically built the JV baseball field. He helped build the softball fields. He helped our hitting facility. He was instrumental in that and the main reason that got put up, and so he’s been a huge asset to the program and all the programs out there. We wouldn’t have those buildings without Greer if you ask me,” Minico Head Baseball Coach Jared Price said.

Copeland also had a hand in the tennis courts, soccer fields and concession stands for this athletic complex saving the school hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process.

“We live in a small rural community, and he is a pillar in our community. He’s very, very supportive, a great example to those around him. And because of the work he’s done with the youth and the things that he’s committed, he’s going to leave a legacy and what better way to do that than to have the complex named after him,” Minico Principal Kimberly Kidd said

But what does Greer Copeland himself think about the complex’s name change?

“It’s humbling for one thing. It’s very honoring, undeserving...For that complex to be named after me it’s amazing to me because I always felt like I just did it because there was a need. I’m a guy that likes to serve the community, love the kids and love the high school,” Copeland said.

The Copeland Athletic Complex will host its first set of baseball and softball games this week, barring weather delays, as the high school spring sports season gets underway.
