CSI basketball teams open Scenic West Athletic Conference play with wins
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The College of Southern Idaho men’s and women’s basketball teams moved into the second phase of their respective seasons today: conference play. And both teams managed to get things started on the right foot.
Ladies first of course and the Golden Eagles flew out to an 11-point first quarter lead thanks in large part to 10 points from Kennedy Gillette.
CSI was not showing signs of slowing down in the second quarter either as Alina Sapilak knocked home two three pointers and helped CSI to a 15-point halftime lead.
In the final two quarter the Golden Eagles took their foot off the gas a bit being outscored by NIC in both quarters, but it wouldn’t matter as Samara Morrow’s eight fourth quarter points helped CSI stave off the comeback attempt on the way to an 80-69 win.
Gillette led CSI in scoring with 17 points, Morrow followed with 13 and Fallon Bedke rounded out the top three with 10 points despite fouling out in the third quarter.
On the men’s side these two teams were practically trading buckets all afternoon long as the first half saw CSI heading to the break with a two-point lead, Walker Timme had eight at the half.
In the second half it was all Khayri Dunn for CSI as the guard played the full 20 minutes, shot 9-of-10 for 22 points and added two three pointers, but the Golden Eagles trailed by three in the final 20 seconds.
That’s when Tanner Hayhurst forced a steal that led to a Nathan Ahner layup to cut the lead to one and after NIC missed the front end of the one-and-one CSI got the ball back with roughly 10 seconds to go.
On that play it was Dunn for the Golden Eagles taking charge and finishing the game-winning layup with barely any time left on the clock as the Golden Eagles escape with a conference win.
Only five players scored for CSI in this one as Dunn led all scorers with 27, Ahner poured in 14, Timme had 12 and Isaac Hawkins and Jalen Lyn each had 11 to round out the scoring.
Up next both Golden Eagles teams will host Salt Lake Community College on Wednesday night with the women set for 5:00 p.m. and the men set for 7:00.
