Hagerman, Butte County set to meet again in 2A football semifinals Thursday night
HAGERMAN, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — We are now less than 24 hours from kickoff in the first IHSAA state football semifinal game in Pocatello where the Hagerman Pirates will be taking on a familiar foe for a spot in the 2A title game.
That opponent is coincidentally also called the Pirates as Hagerman will take on top- seeded Butte County tomorrow evening for the second time this year.
The Pirates won the previous matchup 30-14 and that game is Butte County’s only loss this season.
Hagerman has won every game since a mid-September loss to Valley, a team the Pirates got revenge on last week, and now this Butte County team finds themselves in a similar position this week.
We caught up with some of the Pirates players to talk about some keys to the game.
“They run a lot of read stuff, they are a physical power back team so we have to be more physical up in the trenches and stop that, and stretch it out along the sidelines and make them play from behind the chains,” said senior wide receiver Ky Kendall.
“We just have to stuff that run and then watch for play action later on,” senior receiver Shaymus Merrill added.
“We just have to make them throw the ball, we stop the run and then hopefully get a couple more picks like we did last time,” said Wyatt Mavencamp, the Hagerman quarterback.
As seniors, Merrill and Kendall would love to close out their high school football careers in the state title game, and Mavencamp as a junior would love to help get them there.
“It would be huge, I’ve dreamed about this since I was a little kid so being able to get a hand on the blue trophy, or lips I guess once we’re at the end would be a dream,” Kendall said.
“I would love it, with these guys being ahead of me and leading me to where I am now and encouraging me to keep going it would be a dream, and we’ll get there,” Mavencamp said.
Hagerman will face off with Butte County Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. at the ICCU Dome in Pocatello and of course we will have those highlights for you here on KMVT.
