Kimberly’s two-point gamble pays off; Bulldogs heading to state semis
KIMBERLY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The Kimberly Bulldogs went for two in overtime and it was a decision that paid off as the Dawgs topped Fruitland 27-26 in overtime to move onto the 4A state football semifinals.
The Bulldogs scored the game’s first 12 points, including a Macraye Bruning touchdown pass to Joe Barrett, and led by the awkward score of 12-5 at the half.
Fruitland managed to get two touchdowns on the board in the second half as well as a safety, and Kimberly added a touchdown and extra point as both team’s defenses held strong for the remainder of regulation forcing overtime in this 4-5 matchup.
In overtime, Fruitland put up the first points on a rushing touchdown from and hit the extra point putting all the pressure on the Dawgs who ended up finding their way into the endzone courtesy of a Mason Jensen receiving touchdown, but they weren’t satisfied going for the tie as Bruning found Jensen again for the two and the win.
They call that an octopus, when you get the touchdown and the two-point conversion on the same drive, and Jensen’s clinched the game for the Dawgs and moves them into the semifinals for a rematch with top-seeded Sugar-Salem, a team Kimberly has already beaten once this year, 17-14 in September.
Game time and location are still to be determined.
