KIMBERLY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Last week marked the local elections, where the Rock Creek Fire District pushed for a levy to be passed, but it did not secure enough votes. The fire levy is supplemental and expires after two years.

Voting in favor of the levy would have created an opportunity to make the supplemental levy permanent to support the fire district with an additional $1.3 million. During last week’s election, the levy did receive more votes in favor for the levy by 51%, however it still wasn’t enough votes to make the levy pass. The fire district needed a super majority or two thirds of the vote.

“Really, our levy’s about three things. First and foremost, it’s about hiring more firefighters,” said Chief of the Rock Creek Fire District, Aaron Zent. “Currently we only have three full-time guys on per shift, and on days like this, we’re short one firefighter. “I’m down to two firefighters, to cover 212 square miles from Kimberly and past Murtaugh.”

The levy will be back on the ballot this November election. In addition to helping with hiring more first responders, the levy will provide assistance with the maintenance of the fire stations and more.
