Salute to Idaho Agriculture: Horticulture month
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —Gardening is a big part of some Idahoans’ summer routines, and Governor Little named May Horticulture Month across the state, and that’s the focus of this week’s Salute to Idaho Agriculture.
Horticulture is defined as the art or practice of garden cultivation and management.
As of 2023 over half of Americans (55%) actively garden and the hobby has been shown to boost mood while lowering stress and anxiety.
Here in the Gem State, flowers or plants with the Idaho Preferred sticker highlight the work of the state’s farmers who grow a variety of crops and flowers that end up making their way back to consumers here in the state.
Erica White, an Idaho Preferred Program Manager for the Idaho State Department of Agriculture talked about how this day came to be.
“It’s actually our second annual Idaho Horticulture Month,” said White. “We recognized alongside our partners at Idaho Nursery and Landscape Association, how incredibly vital our greens and horticulture industry was to our state, just on an economic level. So we reached out to Governor Little and broached the subject and he was happy to declare it as Idaho Horticulture Month.”
