TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Many people, including Twin Falls City Spokesman Josh Palmer, were shocked when Magic Valley Recycling suddenly closed out of nowhere, leaving questions as to how the city would recycle cardboard.

“We got it the same way you did probably,” Palmer said. “' Did you know that Magic Valley Recycling closed down?’”

According to Palmer, city officials and PSI Environmental Waste have worked to arrange sorting and bailing so recycling could continue uninterrupted in Twin Falls.

“We were just notified a little while ago that they were closing business, kind of news to us too. "

PSI District Manager Jason Kirschenmann said there was no place to take curbside cardboard and comingled recycling.

“We made a deal with Pacific Steel and Recycling, and they are taking all of that and bailing it,” Kirschenmann said.

PSI plans to build a new building where they can dump the cardboard and bail it out internally. But until construction is complete, Pacific Steel will temporarily act as a community drop-off for cardboard and other recyclables.

“We didn’t realize how many people used that drop off until Magic Valley went away,” Kirschenmann said. “We don’t have infrastructure right to have a drop off but once we get our building done, we’re looking at either working with the city or working with the county; somebody that has a spot that we can use as a drop off for at least cardboard and a few other commodities.”

KMVT contacted the owners of Magic Valley Recycling, but they said they could not comment on the closure due to legal reasons.
