Fit and Well: Carbon monoxide dangers
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — This time of year, people are more likely to get carbon monoxide poisoning, according to Magic Valley Paramedics.
That’s the focus of this week’s Fit and Well Idaho report.
Carbon monoxide is a gas that cannot be seen, tasted or smelled. It is created by burning things like wood and gas.
Experts say common causes of carbon monoxide poisoning include using your stove to stay warm, a clogged chimney or heating up your car in the garage, even with the door open.
Prolonged exposure can lead to death.
KMVT spoke with Magic Valley Paramedics about the symptoms to look out for.
“Headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, those are the first ones that you’re going to see, that you’re going to feel and recognize,” said Stan Flint, Manager of Magic Valley Paramedics. “Later on, people become unconscious, and that’s when it gets critical. Anybody who is suspected to have been exposed, call 911.”
Carbon monoxide detectors can be installed in your home to alert you if the levels get too high.
It is recommended that you routinely check to make sure that they are working.
